Brick House is building a 40,000-square-foot, one-bedroom brick house at 631 S. W. St. in Maplewood, an investment in which the tenant will pay a portion of her income from the sale of the lot.

"To me that's so exciting," said Bob Hickey, the landlord. "To me it puts your home out there and in the neighborhood. It gives their neighbors hope."

In May, Hickey and his co-owners bought their neighbor's home at 1320 N. M. in Oakwood. (See more pictures of Oakwood.tv.)

This month, Hickey said it's just the beginning. Hickey said building more houses means people who live in Oakwood or Oakwood Heights can afford lower prices and can move, not only as renters, but also as homeowners or as neighbors.

"We're also the first new neighborhood to have a home built in Oakwood Park," Hickey said.

Brick House is just the start, though. Hickey wants to extend the plan to include all those "other" apartments at the home. For $350,000 the owner, Joe Neely, hopes to expand to include the new homes that are in the development as well — some 50 homes down from a previous proposal.
