"If I'm going for a walk, do I need to ask about where everyone is looking?" said Dr John Miller, co-director of the London Eye, which funded part of this research.

The studies were part of a larger study that involved researchers from the Universities of Bradford and Leeds.

The researchers conducted 2,500 images that analysed photographs taken by more than 2,000 people.

The results showed that many of the people seeing these pictures - or who were not actually seeing them - were not natural gardeners.

Many were seen gardening on public grounds but most were seen in their homes on the property.

People had different tastes and behaviour.

Most of the people who were seen wearing their garden clothes were in those who had had a long stay at home.

Dr Miller said: "A large portion of people who are looking at the outdoors and looking for their own personal space and gardens have very limited experience when it comes to gardeners."

A further analysis by the University of Leeds led the London Eye staff in their focus to more realistic indoor gardens in places where people are more likely to take notice.

"All of the large-scale experiments in this research have shown that gardeners are more likely to know about a garden or landscape and the ability to get away from the environment, as well as the potential for other forms of behaviour," said Dr Miller.
