At the second annual plant, the R.C.I.B.'s Green Seed Program aims to enhance the health and natural resources of rural Kentucky by developing seeds for planting in urban areas, and promoting the use of plants grown in Kentucky as fertilizer, natural gas, and other natural resources.

The green seed program was developed in 1996, with $4.4 million in funding from the U.S. Treasury through federal grants and grants from the USDA. The program, which is open to any Kentucky voter, is funded through five general fund levels, a $50 million cash injection each year from U.S. General Programs to promote and encourage the use of local seed production in rural areas. More than 8,000 small-scale seeds were selected to be planted across 11 locations on Thursday morning.

The plants were planted from May 1 through October 12 to support the U.S. Green Seed Bank, which helps provide seed to rural areas.

The seed banks will be set up under the Kentucky State Plant Bank (KSPB) program and will provide a variety of benefits, like seed for the farmer, and support to the state government for providing cash, food, and training to U.S. Agriculture officials and other state staff in the field to grow and maintain green seed, as well as the use of the seed and other natural resources.
