The University of California at San Diego reported in June 2014 a water level higher than about 3,000 liters "on a given day." The UCSD study was performed last fall but was not yet approved by the U.S. Public Health Service in a way that would give UC San Diego any future access to water from nearby water systems so as not to cause any health problems.

An online water quality check for one of UC San Diego's nine building communities had the highest average daily water consumption at 6,700 litres per day, which included a six liter of water every day and a 16 liter daily tap.
