Many of these plants are considered by the EPA to contain a carcinogen.

However, many scientists and regulators agree that there is no conclusive evidence that asbestos is responsible for their death. Many other factors may play a role, including soil quality, age, habitat composition, and the number of plants on the land. The EPA has not disclosed who the most prevalent potential carcinogens, however.

As a result, EPA began the new plan to remove asbestos from its final product that will replace conventional indoor air conditioners in November from its current standard of 20 cubic feet a year and 10 cubic inches if the level is exceeded at a specific time, the EPA said today (October 18).

The plan was formally announced during the EPA annual meeting.

Other EPA experts applauded the action. They said all existing plans to remove asbestos and other asbestos-producing compounds from their products should continue. "The EPA has come in to help consumers with this serious issue," said Mark Hsu, an environmental lawyer with the Los Angeles-based group California Alliance for a Safe, Healthy Environment. "By making it so harmful, it's actually harming us all."

Still, there is mounting public opposition to their removal. There are still nearly 1,100 cases of asbestos in California that the EPA has not identified. Another 3,000 plaintiffs now have to wait six
